What to Expect When You Visit a Flooring Showroom

Choosing new flooring online has its place, but there is a limit to what you can judge from a screen. Timber grain, board texture, colour under different lighting, the way a plank feels underfoot — none of this comes across in a product photo. It is why almost every Sydney homeowner who is serious about flooring ends up in a showroom before committing to a full order.

If you are planning a visit to a flooring showroom for the first time, this guide covers what to expect, what to bring, and how to make the most of the visit. We have walked thousands of Sydney homeowners through this over the last 30 years across our showrooms in Miranda, Kensington, Concord and Coorparoo, and there is a small set of things that separate a productive visit from a wasted afternoon.

Why a Showroom Visit Is Worth the Time

Three things are genuinely different in person compared to online:

In person, not on screen

Colour under real light

Timber and stone-look decors shift dramatically under different lighting. A plank that looks warm brown in a product photo can look almost grey under fluorescent light. Seeing samples in natural and artificial light gives you a proper read.

Texture and feel

Modern laminates, hybrids and engineered timbers all use surface texture to sell the look of real timber. Some are convincingly deep and grainy, others are surprisingly flat. You can only judge this by touching and walking on them.

Plank scale

A 240mm-wide plank looks very different to a 190mm-wide plank in a room, but almost identical in a product photo. Full-size display boards let you see the actual scale.

Worth the trip

A showroom visit typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and can save weeks of second-guessing after ordering online.

What to Bring to Your Visit

The homeowners who get the most out of a showroom visit bring a small handful of practical items. Nothing complicated:

  • Room measurements. Even rough numbers help. Length x width for each room being floored, plus any hallways or transitions.
  • Photos of the space. Wide shots of each room, plus close-ups of skirting boards, existing flooring, and any transitions. Photos of the natural light through the day are helpful too.
  • Paint chips, cabinetry samples, tile samples. Anything else in the room’s colour palette. Flooring rarely gets chosen in isolation.
  • Inspiration photos. Screenshots or a Pinterest board of floors you like. This gives our team a fast read on the aesthetic direction.
  • Budget range. Even a rough number ($50–80/m² supply, or $150–220/m² installed) helps us focus on products in the right price bracket rather than showing you options that do not suit your project.
  • Timeline. When you are planning to install, and when you are planning to renovate the room around it. Lead times for premium engineered timber can run to 4–6 weeks.

What to Expect on Arrival

A good flooring showroom visit is not a hard sell. Here is how a typical visit runs at any of our locations:

  1. Welcome and quick chat We will ask about your project: which rooms, what style you are going for, whether you are renovating or replacing existing flooring, and roughly when you want it done.
  2. Guided walk of the ranges We will show you the products that match your project, walking through the differences between hybrid, laminate, engineered timber and solid timber where relevant. Not all of them, just the ones that fit your situation.
  3. Full-size display boards Every product on the wall or floor is a full-size sample so you can see the actual plank width, texture and finish.
  4. Sample take-home For products that make your shortlist, we will usually offer take-home samples so you can view them at home under your own lighting.
  5. Rough quote For most projects we can give an indicative price on the day. For anything involving installation, we will book a free measure and quote at your home.
  6. No pressure to buy Two or three showroom visits before deciding is completely normal, especially for renovations.

Walk-in visits are welcome and useful for early-stage browsing when you want to look around without commitment.

Best for: Getting a first feel for products, styles and price brackets.

Recommended for renovations

Book an Appointment

Booked appointments guarantee a specific team member’s time, which is worth it once you have specific rooms, samples or products in mind. Book via our contact page or call 1300 357 662.

Best for: Renovation projects and any visit involving detailed product comparison.

What Happens After the Visit

Most homeowners take samples home after a first visit. From there, the typical journey is:

  1. Compare samples at home Under your own lighting, next to your existing furniture and finishes.
  2. Book a free measure and quote If you are getting the floor professionally installed, book a free measure and quote. We come to you, assess the subfloor, check moisture, measure precisely, and provide a written quote.
  3. Return to the showroom for a second visit If you want to compare finalists side by side, or to look at additional products based on what worked and did not work at home.
  4. Order and schedule installation Timber and premium products often need 2–6 weeks lead time. Installation itself typically takes 1–3 days for a standard project.
